? Betting on the Penguins

Betting on Pittsburgh Penguins

Betting on the Pittsburgh Penguins is very easy; if you’re not sure where to begin, just follow our tips!

Betting on hockey is simple, and you can find Penguins odds for each game on all online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania. To start betting, you’ll need to register on a sportsbook of your choosing and complete all required steps to set up your account. You can place NHL futures well in advance, but the individual game odds are released on the game days.

Spread/Puck Line

Spread betting is not as interesting for hockey bettors as it is for football bettors, since the goal differences in hockey aren’t often big. However, you can place point spread bets for any of the Penguins’ games.

Spread betting means wagering on the goal margin between the two teams. If the Penguins are the favorites against the Philadelphia Flyers, you might see a point spread like this:

Penguins -1.5 -110
Flyers +1.5 -110

This means the Penguins need to win by two goals to cover the spread and the Flyers need to stay within one goal or win outright to cover. Odds are sometimes -110 on both sides to get bettors to wager evenly, but they can also vary a lot in hockey betting.

Moneyline

Moneyline is a more simple bet type since you only wager on the winner of the game. If the odds are Penguins -125 and Flyers +135, Penguins are the favorites and Flyers the underdogs. If you wager on the Penguins, you need to bet $125 to win $100, but if you wager on the Flyers, betting $100 successfully will earn you $135.

Total (Over/Under)

If the game is between two evenly matched teams, a total bet might be the way to go. Total bets are over or under a predetermined number of goals in the game. An example could be O 5.5 / U 5.5; if the result is 3-4, over bettors win, but if the game ends 2-3, the unders have it.

Props

There are two types of proposition bets, or props. The team props are wagers on things like first team to score, which team is leading at first intermission, which teams gets the first penalty, and so forth.

The other type is player props, which are options like how many goals Sidney Crosby scores and who scores the first goal in the second period.

Each online sportsbook has a big selection of props with good odds, although potential injuries and the starting goaltender will alter the odds pretty quickly.

Live Bets

You can also place these types of wagers like during the game. The odds change quickly, but shrewd bettors can make some excellent bets if they sense a goal coming or one team gaining control of the action. Live betting is available for all Pittsburgh hockey games on all PA online sportsbooks.

Futures

Futures are bets on upcoming events. You can wager on the winner of the Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe Trophy, or the division winners. Future odds change as the season progresses and teams fall out of playoff contention, so in general the earlier you bet, the bigger the potential payout.

?? Penguins Betting Tips

Betting on hockey is quite simple and there isn’t any particular strategy you can follow. If you follow the Penguins actively, you’ll know their top players, the results of recent games, and the upcoming games. To get started with online wagering, you can follow these tips:

  1. Oh Captain, My Captain
Two-time NHL MVP Sidney Crosby has led the Penguins in points almost every season since he joined the team. If you want to bet on props but don’t know where to start, Crosby to get a point is a good first prop bet.
  2. Goaltending: Threat or Opportunity?
Tristan Jarry has been the Penguins’ #1 goalie for years now and this season he is backed up by Alex Nedeljkovich. Goaltending hasn’t been Pittsburgh’s top asset for some time, but neither have the two flopped. A shutout is always a possibility, if not a very likely one.
  3. The Schedule Reshuffle
While the number of games in a season is still 82, the Penguins are playing their biggest rivals, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers, just three times. Some fans have expressed disappointment in the reshuffle of the schedule since divisional games often rile up the homecrowds the most. A more detailed look into the Atlantic Division might offer you betting opportunities other fans might miss since the Penguins meet each of those teams three times.
  4. Another Day, Another Injury
There’s no denying that the Penguins get hurt a lot. The team’s leading players Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Rust have all lost a ton of games due to injuries in recent seasons. Should the stars align for the team this year and everyone gets to practice and play together for most of the season, maybe the Penguins will make it to the playoffs after missing out again last season. However, Pittsburgh is not the youngest team in the league, so let’s not jinx it.

?? Notable Players

Sidney Crosby: There’s not much we can say about Sidney Crosby that hasn’t been said already. The captain leads by example and is still the most important player to the Penguins. Every single night, he gives Pittsburgh the chance to win.
Evgeni Malkin: Evgeni Malkin is still as skilled as ever, but he hasn’t been able to produce points consistently. Also, the fiery temper isn’t always helpful.
Kris Letang: The leader of the defense has had more than his share of health troubles, but continues on to be the cornerstone of the Penguins team.
Erik Karlsson: We were all curious to see how this turned out. During the regular season, Karlsson eclipsed Letang in points but sometimes struggled defensively.
Bryan Rust: Crosby’s winger has grown from a protégé to full-blown star in his own right.
Tristan Jarry: He succeeded two Stanley Cup winning starting goalies and hasn’t been bad, but not a top-5 goalie in the League either.

? Penguins 2023-24 Season

The Penguins were expected to be back in the playoff race after missing out narrowly in the previous season. The new acquisitions like Erik Karlsson were also hoped to add a new layer to the Penguins’ game play.

However, the team didn’t click at any point during the season and things were looking quite grim in the middle of the Winter. Pittsburgh managed a late push for the playoffs in March as many Metro competitors also stumbled in their quests for the playoffs.

Yinzer hearts broke at least a tiny bit when Jake Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Michael Bunting in March. The shake up didn’t yield the desired result as the Washington Capitals edged out the competition to win the last playoff spot in their final game of the regular season.

The Penguins missed the playoffs for the second time in a row and haven’t won a playoff series since 2018. Many question whether Mike Sullivan’s time should be over in Steel City, but current GM Kyle Dubas still has the coach’s back.

?? Playoffs Performance

  • Playoff Appearances: 37
  • Playoff Record: 212-186
  • Stanley Cups: 5 (1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, 2017)
  • Last Playoff Appearance: 2022 First Round (lost to New York Rangers)

Who is the greatest Pittsburgh Penguin of all time?

It's a close call but we still have to say Mario Lemieux over Sid the Kid, although we might change our answer in the future. Mario changed the trajectory of the team, rescued the franchise when needed, and was one of the best to ever play the game. Without Mario, there would be no Pittsburgh Penguins we know today.
